Mental State & Mindfulness

Why does mental health matter?

How you feel emotionally has a tremendous impact on how you feel physically. Stress, anxiety and depression can not only increase your risk of several types of health conditions, including heart disease or stroke, but it can also directly and indirectly impact urinary and sexual health.

Health Conditions and Your Mental State

When we talk about your mental state, we aren’t just referring to clinical depression and anxiety. Every day stress can influence your mental state which can contribute to a variety of health challenges you may be experiencing.

For example, depression and depressive symptoms can make it difficult to achieve an erection both directly (through symptoms) and indirectly (though conventional treatments / medications)

Stress and anxiety over attempts to get pregnant can actually make it more challenging to get pregnant.

Stress and anxiety can also contribute to more frequent urination throughout the day and night.

SPAN UP Your Mental State

At HolSpanMD, we know there are many lifestyle interventions that can help you achieve a healthy mental state.

Mental State Tips:

  • Exercise. Physical activity promotes the release of many naturally produced compounds within our body that lower stress while improving our mood and improving sleep. Movement practices including yoga, qigong, and dynamic and static stretching helps you manage your mental state while also encouraging quality sleep.

  • Explore breathwork. Breathwork consists of focused awareness of the process of breathing. Typically, long, deep breaths at varying tempos are used. Many organizations that rely on peak mental performance (professional sports teams, military, high performers in many disciplines) use breathwork as a tool to improve overall mental and physical health. Breathwork is typically the cornerstone of mindfulness or meditation practices.

  • Spend time in nature. Spending time outdoors tends to be a "natural" mood enhancer. Outdoor activities that allow for safe sun, plenty of greenery, and sky helps combat time spent indoors. Walking, hiking, active outdoor vacations, watching the sun rise and set are examples of activities to pursue.

  • Express gratitude. Explore a gratitude practice. Being thankful for the many small blessings in your life will assist in buffering the negativity bias that surrounds us in many aspects of modern living.

  • Adopt spiritual practices. Grounding your life with the ancient wisdom of practices that allow you to deeply connect with others and the world improves your overall mental state. Virtues to model include: compassion, love, forgiveness, and serenity.

  • Develop healthy routines and habits. Humans are creatures of habit. We thrive on healthy routines that prioritize nutrition, rest, and physical activity and limit unhealthy habits like substances and technology abuse.

  • Establish healthy connections. Relationships are a core part of who we are, and maintaining these connections are critical to our mental state.
